LIBERAIS, COMUNITARISTAS E REPUBLICANOS: A QUESTÃO DA LIBERDADE

Resumo

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar os principais aspectos do debate contemporâneo sobre a liberdade civil e a possível contribuição do pensamento republicano nesta discussão. A intenção é mostrar como este debate tem sido geralmente polarizado entre uma concepção liberal, na qual ser livre numa sociedade civil significa não encontrar interferências para a realização dos diversos fins almejados pelos indivíduos, e uma concepção comunitarista, na qual ser livre é realizar plenamente a finalidade inscrita na própria natureza do ser humano; e discutir se a concepção republicana não escaparia dessa dicotomia, ao manter a perspectiva pluralista de valores e fins, sem renunciar à ideia de que o dever cívico e o constrangimento legal são componentes fundamentais para a preservação da liberdade civil.

Abstract: This article aims at analyzing the main aspects of the current debate about civil liberty and the possible contribution of the republican thought in the discussion. It seeks to show how the debate has been polarized between a liberal conception, where being free in a civil society means no interference impeding the achievement of individuals' aims, and a communitarian conception, where being free means to fully accomplish the purpose that is inherent to the human nature. The article will also discuss whether the republican conception escapes such a dichotomy by maintaining the pluralistic perspective of values and purposes, without renouncing the idea that civic duty and legal constraints are key components for the preservation of civil liberty.
