Abstract: This paper is the translation of a text published by Professor VITTORIO HOSLE in the philosophy journal Aquinas (Rome), n. 39 (1996): 307-320, under the title "Philosophy in an age of overinformation, or: what we ought to ignore in order to know what really matters". The paper's title tells us perfectly well about its content. The editorial staff of Síntese is grateful to Professor VITTORIO HOSLE for his kind permission to translate and publish this essay - which deals with very actual matters in the field of philosophy - and is aware of the great privilege of inscribing in its pages the contribution of one of the most brilliant thinkers of the new generation of German philosophers.
