Abstract

The construction of the divine figure is often marked by dissonant and incongruent elements. One example is the interpretation of the God of the Old Testament as punitive and the God of the New Testament as merciful. However, a contextual analysis of the book of Amos and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus will show, through the thematic link of compassion, that the divine presence is the same in both Testaments. Understanding this nuance enables a deeper and more authentic experience of Christian discipleship.
