The Genealogy of Morals, by Friedrich Nietzsche, is one of the greatest philosophical investigations into the origin of morality. In this work, Nietzsche strongly criticizes the traditional values that he sees as derived from ressentiment, a psychological state of hatred that imprisons the person in a condition of non-overcoming. This traditional morality, associated with the “slaves” or the “weak,” stands in opposition to the aristocratic morality, associated with the “masters” or the “strong.” Nietzsche suggests an affirmative and creative morality represented by the Übermensch (beyond-man), an ideal of overcoming traditional values and affirming life, distancing itself from conformism, illness, and ressentiment.
