In the present contribution, I develop an existential concept of memory, rigorously oriented by the phenomenological map drawn by Heidegger in his fundamental ontology. Following the direction formally indicated by the concept of retention (Behalten), I advance into an unsuspected region inhabited by a great diversity of mnemonic phenomena whose structures are entirely distinct. I will attempt to show that this diversity stands in a striking consonance with the ways of being of the entities retained. The unconcealment of Being provides the measure for retentional comportment, which maintains the entity within revealability. As with everything that pertains to Dasein, its memory concerns Being and truth. The same holds for its forgettings.
